Abstract

There is an art activity called 'Digital Fabrication Workshop’ (aka Making workshop) at the intersection of 'New Media Art' and 'Maker Movement’, which is a distinctive social phenomenon today. In this research, first, the social context of this workshop, where art of the digital-media-age and personal-making-culture as social movements as well as a paradigm encounter, is researched. Then, comparing them with the theoretical background of 'new art activism', the significance of the workshop activity is explored. After setting the artists who host the workshop activities as the main actors, through interviews with them, the research examines the purpose and direction of the activities led by their intentions and thoughts, as well as the values they pursue. As a result of analyzing the interview, it is found that the Digital Fabrication Workshop aims to share the knowledge of digital technology and making as well as practice the meaning of sharing through the artistic approach. In addition, the workshop is considered an activity which tries to understand digital technology through a social and humanistic approach such as co-making-practice. Moreover, the workshop activity suggests a way to use these digital technologies as tools of empowering individuals which can be demonstrated in daily life. Therefore, this study suggests that digital fabrication workshops are not just popular programs in both contemporary art scene and maker culture, but rather are artistic activities of critical approach towards technology in positive ways and has the value of social action that is practiced in an enjoyable and pleasant way through the way of handmaking.

디지털 제작 기술 워크숍 - 새로운 사회행동으로서의 예술

초록

오늘날 특징적인 사회 현상이라할 수 있는 ‘메이커 문화’와 뉴미디어아트가 만나는 교차점에서 ‘디지털 제작 기술 워크숍’이라는 예술활동이 일어나고 있다. 이 연구에서는 우선 디지털 매체 시대의 예술과 사회운동이자 하나의 패러다임으로서 개인제작문화가 만나 일어나는 이러한 워크숍이 어떠한 사회적 맥락에서 발생하는지 살펴본 후 ‘뉴아트행동주의’라는 이론적 배경과 비교하여 이 활동들의 의의를 탐구해본다. 그리고 워크숍 활동을 주최하는 예술가를 주요 행위자로 설정한 후 인터뷰를 통해 그들의 의도와 생각에서 드러나는 활동의 목적과 방향, 추구하는 가치 등을 살펴본다. 인터뷰 내용을 분석한 결과 디지털 제작 기술 워크숍은 예술이라는 방식을 통해 디지털 기술과 제작에 대한 지식의 공유와 나눔의 가치를 실천하고, 함께 만드는 행위와 같은 사회적이고 인간적인 접근방식을 통해 디지털 기술을 이해하며, 이러한 디지털 기술을 일상의 영역에서 발휘할 수 있는 힘이자 자력의 도구로 사용하는 방법을 제안하고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 따라서 디지털 제작 워크숍은 단지 동시대의 유행하는 예술프로그램으로 여겨지기보다, 기술에 대한 비판적 접근을 적극적이고 긍정적으로 행하는 예술활동이자 제작이라는 몸의 경험을 통해 즐겁고 유쾌한 방식으로 실천하는 사회행동의 가치를 지니고 있음을 본 연구에서 주장하고자 한다.
